It is important to keep careful and detailed records
Updated to reflect the revised CRA Administrative Policy, The Personal Automobile Log is designed to help those who use either their own or a leased automobile for business purposes keep complete and accurate records to support their automobile expense claims. The Personal Automobile Log has been updated to reflect the revised CRA Administrative Policy released June 28, 2010.
The CRA maintains that the best evidence remains a detailed record for the entire year. However, in order to reduce the record-keeping burden for small business owners, the CRA announced it would accept a sample three-month auto log to support automobile expense claims for the year once a complete auto log for the entire year is kept, beginning in 2009, if certain requirements are met. The Personal Automobile Log is a durable, pocket-sized booklet that lets individuals keep track, on a daily basis, of such important details as:
- Kilometers driven for business purposes
- Fuel and other recurring expenses
- Maintenance and repairs
- Leasing or other financing costs
- Annual expenses, and
- Other information
